HISTORY OF PHARMACY:
The Pharmacy education in India is the visionary gift of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya who founded the Banaras Hindu University
in 1916. The responsibility of starting Pharmacy Education was entrusted by him to Prof.Mahadev Lal Schroff.
It was in 1944 that pharmacy education made a start in this part of the undivided country through Panjab University, Lahore, as
an urgent need was felt for having a sufficient number of properly trained personnel for the implementation of the Drugs Act,
1940. A three-year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy was initiated, utilizing the facilities of King Edward
Medical College, Lahore, and the Departments of Botany and Chemistry of the university.
With the partition of the country in 1947, the staff and the students were shifted to Amritsar, where teaching started afresh.
The post-Partition days were indeed very trying. The teaching facilities were housed partly in Khalsa College and partly in the
Medical College at Amritsar. The late Professor K.N.Gaind, who had joined as Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at Lahore in 1946, was
handed the responsibility of organizing the department anew. In 1959, the department was shifted to the Punjab University
campus at Chandigarh, with Professor Gaind as its Head. Since then, the pharmaceutical education has grown slowly but steadily
to its present status of being a premier technical education and research in the country.
